Is this thing on?

I have never -- and I mean NEVER -- commented on a 'blog' before, and I think in my technical innocence I initially posted my comment as e-mail instead. I will henceforth paraphrase whatever it is I initially wrote then a few minutes ago....

....

"Ah, 'tis my proud old friend, Mr. 'Nyctereutes procyonoides'! Also known, less fetchily, as Mr. 'Tanuki', the old devil! I once played a game of craps with Mr. Tanuki over the fate of the Canadian Prime Minister's soul -- alas, the winner remains unknown. I cannot remember the outcome, for it was after many a giant tankard of sweet o-sake between us, in a drinking contest that lasted until the wee small hours, when he finally turned back into a pumpkin, the waitress turned back into a bunch of mice, and I turned back into a man who had quite a lot of work to do the following day. (But, just before that happened. I do remember seeing him grinning... strangely.)

Yes the Tanuki is a symbol/god/etc. of virility, fertility, and general abundance. He is also a bit of a Raven or a Manabozho -- a trickster, a drinker, a lover of earthly delights. Therefore he is the patron god of taverns and good restaurants and not a few houses of ill-repute.

The thing is -- and this is very, very Shinto -- he's a real Japanese animal. Furthermore, he's extemely cute. Here he is:

Apparently the huge testicles -- not seen in the indecently decent Suokojamin blog pictures -- are real as well; This is a >cough, please< big-balled animal. Thus, he has come to represent, well, the things he has.

Don't blame me about the Prime Minister, though. It was Tanuki's! fault!"

Yeah, I think I wrote something that was pretty close to nothing at all like that.

Good enough.

Hey BB, thanks for the additional information. Your series of emails was quite similar. Indeed, he is very cute in real life.
